A travel eSIM is a digital data pack you install on your phone with a QR code or an app. It is handy outside the EU/EEA — but inside Europe a Finnish plan is often enough.
How we chose
- We compared the same reference pack: about 10 GB / 30 days in Europe and Thailand.
- Prices only from providers’ own sites (Airalo, Saily, Holafly, Nomad, Ubigi).
- Holafly has no fixed 10 GB pack — the table lists unlimited 30 days.
- If a price could not be read (e.g. Saily Thailand), the field was left unverified.
When is an eSIM worth it?
- EU/EEA + Moldova/Ukraine (2026): check your plan’s fair use. Many plans include data roaming — an eSIM is rarely needed.
- Outside the EU: operator roaming can be expensive; a prepaid eSIM is often clearer.
- Dual SIM: keep the Finnish number for calls, eSIM for data.
Where is the “cheapest”?
On comparison day (31.10.2026) Europe 10 GB / 30 day reference prices ranged from Ubigi’s $15 to Saily’s $35.99; Holafly’s unlimited 30 days was $76.50. In Thailand Nomad 10 GB / 30 days was $10, Airalo and Ubigi $11. Prices change — always confirm at checkout.
- Choose fixed data vs unlimited (fair use).
- Check networks (AIS/dtac etc.) and hotspot rules.
- Install the eSIM before travel over Wi-Fi.
- Enable data roaming on the eSIM line; turn off home-plan data abroad if needed.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an eSIM for a trip in Europe?
Often not. According to Traficom, roaming in EU and EEA countries can be used at domestic rates or with a small surcharge. Check your operator’s fair-use quota.
Does eSIM work on iPhone and Android?
On most recent models yes, if the device is unlocked. Check the manufacturer’s eSIM support before buying.
Can I keep my Finnish number?
Yes. Use the home plan for calls/SMS and the eSIM for data (dual SIM). Turn off home-plan data roaming if you want to avoid roaming charges.
